iPad Minimum Requirements

iPad Minimum Requirements for CBS Students
2016-2017 School Year
For new students, the iPad Air (the iPad Mini and iPad Pro do not meet minimum requirements)
with at least 32 Gb of memory.

Note:  With the advent of iOS 10, the iPad2 and iPad3 will no longer be supported by Apple.  Thus, if you own an iPad2 or iPad3 you will need to replace it with an iPad Air or newer version, following the minimum requirements set forth here.

  • If a student uses older versions of an iPad, and it becomes outdated (i.e., school- required apps, books, etc. will not run on it, functions required by the school are not present on the iPad because of software issues, etc.), the student is required to get a newer, compatible version.
  • No 3G or 4G iPads are allowed at CBS. So, buying them from a cellular provider is not an option since the iPads supplied by Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint will typically include a wireless plan with 3G or 4G.
  • Parents of returning students who already possess an older version of an iPad need not worry about obtaining the new iPad Air – as the older version of the iPad will suffice for the student’s remaining years at CBS.
  • Parents of new students are expected to purchase the iPad Air. If a new student uses an older version of an iPad which becomes outdated during his time at CBS, he will be required to obtain a compatible version of the iPad at that time.
  • Griffin Survivor or Otterbox Defender case is strongly recommended.
  • iPad insurance for the entire time the student attends at CBS is strongly suggested.
    • Some of the insurance providers students have used include:
      • AppleCare
      • SquareTrade
      • Worth Ave Group
      • Store protection plan (Best Buy, etc.)

    Home Internet Security

While teaching and modeling digital citizenship is good for both school and home, there still needs to be some sort of security system in place at home.

When I asked Mr. Constant to do some research, he came up with a multitude of ideas, from articles to software to router initiatives.  Many thanks go to him for compiling this list.

The two main options are software that is installed on the home computer and a configured wireless router (the little box with antennas that creates the WiFi in your home).  There are advantages and disadvantages to both.  We recommend doing research before diving into any of these.

If you have one that works for you at home, please let us know by emailing it to me:  djoubert@cbs-no.org

Good overall article explaining it family internet safety from hardware to software monitoring in pretty plain english:

    Find My iPhone/iPad

It may be the most important app on the iPad, but you have to install and activate it!

It's the Find My iPhone app.

Besides creating a lock screen that has the student's name and some sort of contact number (for privacy's sake, the school's would be fine), the Find My iPhone app (which works on the iPad as well) is the most important line of defense if the iPad is lost or stolen.

Remember: the iPad will only be found if it is on a WiFi system.

This answer in the Apple Discussion Forum gives some great information:

Apple IDs and How They Work

When you purchase an iPad for your son, you will need an Apple ID with you, the parent, as the main person on the account. There are many reasons for putting your Apple ID. The two main reasons are these:

    - according to Apple, Inc. terms and conditions, your son may NOT have his own Apple ID until he is 13-years-old;
    - by putting the iPad you have bought for your son on YOUR Apple ID, it will allow you to know when something is changed on your son's iPad, especially if you already own an iOS device, such an iPhone or another iPad. So, if your son enters homework the "Reminders" app (or another task list he uses) on his iPad, you will see his homework show up on YOUR iOS device.

Here is a website you may visit to tell you more about how to create that Apple ID: https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
