When you purchase an iPad for your son, you will need an Apple ID with you, the parent, as the main person on the account. There are many reasons for putting your Apple ID. The two main reasons are these:
- according to Apple, Inc. terms and conditions, your son may NOT have his own Apple ID until he is 13-years-old;
- by putting the iPad you have bought for your son on YOUR Apple ID, it will allow you to know when something is changed on your son's iPad, especially if you already own an iOS device, such an iPhone or another iPad. So, if your son enters homework the "Reminders" app (or another task list he uses) on his iPad, you will see his homework show up on YOUR iOS device.
Here is a website you may visit to tell you more about how to create that Apple ID: https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
